Dual Diagnosis Treatment
Dual diagnosis occurs when a person has a mental health issue along with substance use. Dual diagnosis is a treatable condition with unique needs with respect to both conditions. Since the two types of conditions can work against one another and the recovery process can be interrupted, specialized care is needed for both aspects of treatment to take place simultaneously.
What is Dual Diagnosis
Mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder frequently co-occur with addiction. If a clinician does not address the mental symptoms while treating substance abuse, recovery will not be complete. Care can be better serviced through an integrated treatment model for both conditions.
Approach to Treatment
Dual diagnosis programs utilize parts of psychotherapy, medication treatment and addiction recovery service. Care provided by a therapist and a physician can work together to establish an individualized care plan to be able to assist a patient with stabilization and improve quality of life.
