Relapse Treatment

The term relapse is associated with an individual who has returned to alcohol and/or drug use after a period of sobriety. It is not labelled as a failure. Relapse is part of recovery, and is healthy behaviour as long as the individual is able to return to their recovery. Studies on relapse suggest a multi-faceted emotional and physiological component to the condition as well as relating to stress and using drugs or alcohol that are unresolved past triggers.

Why Relapse Happens

Relapse may be evident in the long-term recovery community. Most importantly, it does not mean the treatment was ineffective, nor does relapse mean that continued involvement in recovery groups is finished. With an understanding of relapse, it may also serve to lessen feelings of shame and possibly even reinvigorate commitment to recovery.

Relapse Programs

Relapse programs often include counselling, support groups, and relapse-prevention planning. They typically involve recognizing triggers and managing triggers with coping strategies, and rebuilding confidence in recovery. The information outlined in the programs' facilitate individuals along their recovery in resilience and continued hope after the course has ended.
