Machhiwara Has Serious Challenges with Addiction

The small and historic city of Machhiwara in the Ludhiana district is not only a vibrant cultural and spiritual center, but is now sadly becoming a point of focus in the fight against drug addiction in Punjab.

A recent event in Sherpur Bet village in Machhiwara established the grim reality of the issue: when the police raided a supposed drug peddler’s home, the officers faced intellectual challenges and were violently attacked when they finally were able to recover 6 grams of heroin on site.

This incident highlights that the opioid epidemic has even infiltrated small towns (and that something that has been seen for years has become acute and dangerous).

Punjab’s Provincial Level Action to Address Addiction

Punjab’s “war on drugs” has seen notable action from enforcement. Between March and August 2025, the Punjab Police has laid 16,400 FIRs and made over 25,600 arrests.

In this time, there have been significant seizures including:

  • Over 1,000 kg of heroin
  • Hundreds of kilos of opium
  • Millions of intoxicating pills

At the same time, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has stated drug trafficking is “genocide on Punjab’s youth”, and asserted action will be taken against any and all traffickers. This level of commitment from the provincial government demonstrates their real intent to combat the drug problem at every level.

How Our Nasha Mukti Kendra in Machhiwara Can Help

At  Nasha Mukti Kendra in Machhiwara, we understand that addressing addiction effectively requires more than policy and enforcement — it requires compassionate, professional, community-focused healing. That is why our approach is holistic and patient/family-centered.

Medical Detoxification

Our program begins with medically supervised detoxification. This step ensures the safety and comfort of patients when withdrawing from drugs including opioids.

Psychological Counseling

Individual and group therapy sessions enable patients to identify the emotional and mental triggers that contribute to their addiction. We work with patients to develop coping techniques that will allow them to manage these triggers and be more successful in their recovery.

Relapse Prevention and Aftercare

Although individuals with substance use disorders have high rates of relapse, it is well-known that with sustained support and follow-up the rate of relapse can be significantly diminished. Our Nasha Mukti Kendra in Machhiwara continues to follow up with individuals, through peer support groups and relapse prevention planning.

Holistic Wellness Program

Re-establishing the physical and mental health that our patients lose because of their addiction is difficult. Therefore, our program incorporates yoga, meditation, nutrition, and organized physical activity in a structured manner to help establish a foundation for sustained sobriety.

Involving Family

Addiction can affect the entire support system connected to patients. Family therapy is available to educate family members and involve them in developing recovery-friendly environments.

Community Awareness and Prevention

In Machhiwara, we are active in conducting educational activities and awareness-building in our community. We work alongside primary and secondary schools, as well as religious institutions (including Gurdwaras), to encourage awareness and early intervention.

A Vision for a Drug-Free Machhiwara

Machhiwara is significant historically — not the least of which is because Guru Gobind Singh wrote about his heartbreaking escape in the very same location — but, as the burden of substance abuse and drug addiction continues to loom, we could be losing more than recovery: we could be losing Machhiwara.

With care that is structured and empathetic in the support of our Nasha Mukti Kendra in Machhiwara, and with support from the Government of Punjab’s enforcement and prevention projects, Machhiwara can find health and strength again.

If you or a person you know struggles with addiction, help is available only steps from your home — with dignity, and healing.
