A Growing Issue: The Local Impact in Haryana
In 2025, Haryana has made many bold and significant deterrent efforts to reduce drug abuse. For example, between January and July this year, there have already been 3,629 arrests and a 35% increase over last year; there have been 2,161 FIRs, an increase in drug seizure, an increase in drug awareness campaigns; all signs of increased enforcement and increases in prevention measures.
Unfortunately, the collateral trawl has come from users shifting increasingly to crushing pain medication such as Tramadol and Pregabalin which lead towards seriously adverse health results such as cardiac arrest and adverse blood clotting, despite being less controlled alternatives.
We were also told there was 52,207 youths were in treatment in the past year, and that 50,628 people had been treated of addiction, both indicating depth of crisis, along with future potential for recovery.
Why We Need to Focus on Ladwa
Ladwa is a strategically located village in the Kurukshetra district, along important trade routes and surrounded by 98 neighbor villages. Even though it should be a rural and semi-urban based trade economy, de-addiction programs that are credible and in close proximity are difficult to locate here. While not one of the more severely hit locations, it lies within drug-traffic routes and is adjacent to other districts that can literally create an immediate path for drugs to be delivered and abused locally. In a recent event, Kurukshetra Police arrested two human traffickers, near Ladwa, with 1.35 kg of opium, signalling the extent that drugs and trafficking play in the area.
